Alternative to Traditional Braces

Alternative to Traditional Braces

Many folks put off receiving necessary orthodontic treatment because they fear wearing conspicuous metal and wire braces. For those who desire a straighter smile, Invisalign is a great alternative to traditional orthodontia. Invisalign consists of wearing retainer-like oral appliances that are made from clear plastic. Over time, wearing Invisalign will correct spacing problems and improve a patient’s occlusion. Sometimes called “clear braces”, Invisalign is practically undetectable to those around you.

How ClearCorrect Work

How ClearCorrect Work

During your initial consultation, dentist will examine your teeth and jaw to ensure the ClearCorrect™ method is right for you. The next step is to take 3-D images and impressions of your teeth to create a customized plan to gently straighten your teeth over a determined period of time. For most patients, a year or so is required before crooked teeth are straight.

Special aligner trays are then placed over your teeth and are changed with a new pair roughly every two weeks as your teeth shift into proper place. One of the unique benefits of wearing clear braces instead of the metal version is that you can take them off during meals and for cleaning. Otherwise, they stay on throughout the day and night. Periodic visits with the dentists are also necessary to monitor your progress and make any adjustments, if the need arises.

Traditional Braces

Traditional Braces

Traditional, metal braces are the type of orthodontic treatment that virtually everyone’s familiar with. Our team typically recommends this option for patients who are in need of moderate to significant tooth movement, or who need correction for more serious bite and jaw concerns. Traditional braces may even be able to improve your health and self-confidence by making it easier to clean teeth effectively, eat easily, and speak properly.

Our younger patients undergoing tooth transition  often benefit from traditional braces. Traditional braces have fixed brackets cemented over the surfaces of teeth where ligatures and other fixed appliances such as palate expanders are anchored. Using consistent pressure, traditional orthodontia will shift teeth to straighter, upright positions over the course of treatment. If necessary, our dentist will work with an experienced oral surgeon when surgically assisted orthodontic treatment is required.

Beyond their traditional color, the only thing traditional about these braces is that you can see them. Contemporary braces are made of super strong metal alloys derived from the space program. Their strength allows them to be the smallest of all braces and therefore the most comfortable. Their density makes them ultra slippery so teeth move faster than they ever have before. Today's braces, in combination with other high tech materials mean fewer office visits to complete treatment.

The braces themselves will consist of metal brackets and an arch wire that connects them. Periodic tightening appointments at one of our offices are required so that we can increase the pressure on your teeth and move them at an appropriate speed. Most cases of traditional braces will also involve the use of rubber bands at some point, which come in a variety of colors that younger patients will enjoy.

Dentofacial Orthopedics

Dentofacial Orthopedics

Dentofacial orthopedics describes the element of orthodontic treatment that guides facial development and growth, a process which primarily occurs during childhood. Through the use of specialized appliances such as expanders and headgear, we can treat facial abnormalities and other developmental conditions. Dentofacial orthopedic treatment may be performed prior to the placement of conventional braces, but may also be used in conjunction with braces.

Our clinical team is skilled in diagnosing the misalignments of the teeth, jaw and facial structure in children and adults in order to provide integrated orthodontic and dentofacial orthopedic care.

Occlusal Adjustment

Occlusal Adjustment

An Occlusal Adjustment is an adjustment of the teeth that will fix a bite misalignment, thus allowing the jaw to open and shut evenly.  Occlusal Adjustments are often required when the bit feels uneven, this can cause too much pressure to be put on one side of the mouth.  The adjustment will involve correcting for loose, shifting, crowded or missing teeth.  Once this has been done, the teeth will meet properly and the bite will be even and comfortable.

Caring For Your Braces

Caring For Your Braces

During the first few days after your braces are placed, eating soft foods will help minimize any discomfort or tenderness you may feel. Lowering your sugar intake will improve your overall oral health and reduce plaque buildup under your wires. To protect your braces, avoid eating:

  • Chewy or sticky foods like licorice, taffy, or gum
  • Crunchy foods like popcorn, ice, or chips
  • Hard foods like nuts, hard candy, crusts
  • Corn on the cob
  • Raw apples or carrots

Advantages of Interceptive Treatment

Advantages of Interceptive Treatment

Some of the most direct results of Interceptive Treatment are:

Creating room for crowded, erupting teeth
Creating facial symmetry through influencing jaw growth
Reducing the risk of trauma to protruding front teeth
Preserving space for unerupted teeth
Reducing the need for tooth removal
Reducing treatment time with braces

Best Time for Orthodontics

Best Time for Orthodontics

Though an orthodontist can enhance a smile at any age, there is an optimal time period to begin treatment. Beginning treatment at this time ensures the greatest result and the least amount of time and expense. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that the initial orthodontic evaluation should occur at the first sign of orthodontic problems or no later than age 7. At this early age, orthodontic treatment may not be necessary, but vigilant examination can anticipate the most advantageous time to begin treatment.

Invisalign

Invisalign

With 3D computer imaging, we can provide you with a series of clear orthodontic aligners which are designed to gently and discreetly straighten your teeth. Known as Invisalign, this orthodontic system enables Imagine being able to visualize your future smile before your treatment has even begun!

Invisalign is successful when you wear each provided set of aligners all day and all night. You will be instructed to wear your aligners for a 2 week period, only removing them during meals, drinking, brushing, and flossing. After 2 weeks, as your teeth begin to become more aligned, you will be instructed to transition to a new set of custom aligners.

Invisalign is a popular orthodontic solution for many teens and adults, thanks to the comfort, ease, and privacy that the procedure offers.

Clear Correct

Another option, which is very popular among teenagers and adults, is Clear Correct. This teeth straightening system involves using clear, plastic oral appliances that resemble a retainer to gradually shift teeth. Clear Correct utilizes the same principles as traditional braces without the need for fixed oral appliances. Patients will wear removable plastic appliances called aligners. Worn over teeth like a retainer, sets of clear aligners are worn in succession to straighten teeth with consistent, gentle pressure.

Clear Correct can improve spacing issues between teeth such as gaps and crowding along with promoting a healthier occlusion or one’s bite. Clear braces are advantageous because they are removable for meals and oral hygiene and look very discreet. In fact, those who wear Clear Correct aligners can smile without conspicuous looking metal and wire braces.

Benefits of Straight Teeth

Benefits of Straight Teeth

Better Brushing
Overlapping teeth can trap food particles. Straight teeth allow for easier brushing and flossing.

Clear Speech
Crooked teeth cause many speech impediments. Confidence may suffer and school/work performance may be impacted.

Easier Eating
Crooked, crowded teeth compromise chewing. Digestive problems can result.

Less Accident-Prone Teeth
Protruding teeth are more prone to breaking. Protective mouthguards may not fit properly.

Fewer Headaches
Crowded teeth wear unevenly. Uneven wear puts pressure on jaw, resulting in chronic headaches.

Improve Gum Health
Better oral hygiene means less tooth decay. Tooth decay and gum disease are linked to heart disease and high blood sugar.

Cost Effective Dental Care
Fewer severe dental health issues with straight teeth. Fewer issues means less expensive treatment.

Lower Risk of Soft Tissue Injury
Crooked teeth can push against soft tissues in mouth. Cuts, sores and infections can result in uneven teeth.

Increases Self-Esteem
One of the biggest benefits of straight teeth. More confidence at work or school and in social situations.

Taking Care of Braces and Teeth

Taking Care of Braces and Teeth

Your usual oral care regimen may not be enough when you have braces:

Brackets and wires make flossing tough.
It is difficult to reach the entire tooth surface with a normal brush.
Food stuck in brackets and wires can increase tooth decay risk.
Cavities and tooth stains are more likely.

Dental care with braces:

Angle brush over and under bracket and scrub gently.
Use a proxabrush to get under wires.
Use a floss threader to get between teeth.

Foods to avoid:

Popcorn
Whole apples
Ice
Hard candy
Sunflower seeds
Bagels
Meat on the bone
